Urban Pulse is a fictional magazine sharing real stories out of Detroit. Rooted in the city’s spirit, we spotlight positive movements in community, art, and activism. In this issue, we explore The Vibrant Village—Avalon Village in Highland Park. Established in 2016 by Detroit activist Mama Shu, Avalon Village emerged as a mission-driven nonprofit working to reclaim blighted spaces and cultivate a sanctuary for the community.

In the wake of losing her two sons, Mama Shu channeled her profound loss into creating a safe, nurturing environment for children and residents alike. Today, Avalon Village spans 45 lots across three blocks, offering resources like a homework house, STEM lab, basketball court, and marketplace. This initiative stands as one of Detroit’s most iconic examples of transforming vacant lots into vibrant community hubs.
